SCIENTIFIC SUMMARY:
The NOAA’s Special Monitoring of Applied Response Technologies (SMART) relies on small, highly mobile teams that collect real-time data using portable, rugged, and easy-to-use instruments during dispersant and in situ burning operations.
An important step into the SMART program is to detect if and what kind of oil (crude? refined?) has been spilled. The selection of Turner fluorometers on the profiling Wirewalker will allow the user to detect the spill’s characteristics throughout the water column.
In addition, it is essential to optimize the application of dispersants during an oil spill. Using a LISST-Black onboard the Wirewalker, the user would be able to measure particle size distribution, particle concentration, small-angle volume scattering function, beam attenuation in situ of the spill. This instrument is integrated with Turner fluorometers completing a full oil spill package. With a LISST-Black on a Wirewalker, the data collected during an oil spill throughout the water column will help develop the optimal strategies for the dispersant’s application.
