Drew is a Research Oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, using observations of upper-ocean dynamics to study ocean/atmosphere interactions, oceanic boundary layer processes, biogeochemical transformations, and coastal environmental health. His research relies on the development and utilization of novel sampling capacity, of which the Wirewalker is an example. Drew has a B.A. in biology from Pomona College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography from SIO. A Fulbright Fellowship and a NSF International Postdoctoral Fellowship allowed for scientific training abroad, including Wirewalker mooring installations off the west coast of South Africa. Drew’s first Wirewalker deployment was in 2004 as part of a pilot study that led into his dissertation research--also centered on observations gathered from the platform. Since then, Drew has used the Wirewalkers in settings around the globe, expanding the measurement capacity and application aspects of the profiler. Wirewalker observations continue to form the backbone of his scientific program as a PI in the Multiscale Ocean Dynamics group at SIO, and in a number of ongoing NSF, ONR, and contract-based projects.
