COMPANY HISTORY

Del Mar Oceanographic, LLC (“DMO”) was established in 2015. However, its roots go back much further, with the initial development of the Wirewalker™, a wave-powered vertical profiling system developed by the Ocean Physics Group, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla CA. The DMO founders, passionate about wave-powered technology and the science it enables, began testing Wirewalker prototypes in 1999. The Wirewalker’s fast, continuous, profiling enables rapidly-evolving small-scale phenomena to be monitored on climatological time scales. A large-scale context of small-scale variability is now accessible, enabled by the endurance afforded by ocean wave power. With the Wirewalker, 100% of on-board battery energy is used directly by the sensors; none is required for propulsion.

Following years of development and field testing, the Wirewalker is now produced commercially by DMO under exclusive license from the University of California. The Wirewalker is a beneficiary of the Technology Transfer Programs of NSF, ONR and UCSD.

Led by that founding core, the DMO team continues to grow, consisting of seagoing oceanographers, engineers, and technicians. Like you, the DMO team understands the complexities of ocean observing; and we’re excited to hear what wave powered profiling can do for you!
